PUNE CITY

The center of education, culture, art and history in Maharashtra, Pune city has often been referred to as the Oxford of the East.
Several educational institutes thrive in this city, home to Pune University, which has a large number of educational affiliates.
Pune is the eighth largest city in India and the second largest in Maharashtra. The city is the administrative capital of Pune district. Pune is a major transportation hub for Western Maharashtra.

Pune has well established manufacturing, glass, sugar, and forging industries since the 1950-60s. It has a growing industrial hinterland, with many information technology and automotive companies setting up factories in Pune district. The city is known for various cultural activities like classical music, spirituality, theater, sports, and literature. As one of the largest cities in India, and as a result of its many colleges and universities, these activities and job opportunities attract migrants and students from all over India and abroad, which makes for a city of many communities and cultures.

In 1990 Pune began to attract foreign capital, particularly in the information technology and engineering industries; new businesses like floriculture and food processing, Wineries started to take root in and around the city. In 1998, work on the six-lane Mumbai-Pune expressway began, the expressway being completed in 2001.

IT Parks were established in Aundh, Hinjawadi and on Nagar Road. In 2008 the Commonwealth Youth Games took place in Pune, which encouraged additional development in the northwest region of the city.

Pune is emerging as a prominent location for IT and manufacturing companies to expand. Pune has the sixth largest metropolitan economy and the second highest per capita income in the country.
